wamono art and BUNDLE STUDIO are hosting a special talk event to commemorate the screening of documentary footage from the “Japanese Avant-Garde Art 1910-1970” exhibition held at the Centre Pompidou in 1986. This event will feature a lively discussion among experts who have been active in the fields of art and architecture for many years.

Part 1 will feature Ms. Seimi Okabe, one of the commissioners (curators) of the “Japanese Avant-Garde Art 1910-1970” exhibition. The discussion will be moderated by art journalist Yoshio Suzuki.

The theme is ‘Exploring the Exhibition That Opened Japanese Avant-garde Art to the World’.

We will delve into the behind-the-scenes stories of the legendary ‘Japanese Avant-garde Art 1910-1970’ exhibition leading up to its realization, and explore its impact on the art scene thereafter. Okabe will also share anecdotes from the time, including interactions with participating artists and memorable occurrences during the exhibition.
This is a unique opportunity to trace the journey of expressions that have bridged eras through the words of Aomi Okabe, who continues to energetically engage in cross-border curation as an independent curator even now.

In the second part, we invite architect Satoshi Okabe, who was involved in the design of the Pompidou Center as a member of the architectural team, and also handled venue design for the ‘Japanese Avant-garde Art 1910-1970’ exhibition, as our guest. The talk will be moderated by Kenichi Teramoto, an architect who curated the UAE Pavilion at the 2021 Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition and won the Golden Lion.

The theme is ‘From the Site of the Pompidou Center: Thinking About Architecture as an Exhibition Space’.

We will hear stories that can only be told by someone who experienced it firsthand, about museum architecture and the relationship between art and space. Furthermore, through a dialogue between architects with extensive international achievements, we will explore the potential of architecture as a physical space that connects the past, present, and future.

A talk event that examines modern Japanese creativity from the perspectives of art and architecture. While tracing the thinking behind expressions, we will explore the interchange of sensibility that connects creation and appreciation. We hope you enjoy this rare opportunity.

Aomi Okabe 
Former Chief Curator at Mercian Karuizawa Museum, Lecturer/Visiting Professor at École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Full-time Faculty at Musashino Art University’s Department of Art and Culture, Artistic Director (Exhibition Sector) at Japan Cultural Institute in Paris (2014−2020), Director of the International Section of the Ueno Forest New Concept Executive Committee (2018−2021).
Curated exhibitions such as ‘Japanese Avant-garde Art 1910−1970’ (1986, Pompidou Center), ‘International Biennials of Art Cinema’ (1990, 92 Pompidou Center Jury), ‘Georges Rousse Hanshin Art Project’ (1995), and ‘Georges Rousse in Miyagi’ (2013).
Since 2016, she has curated numerous exhibitions such as ‘Mamoru Manabe + Hakuto Ishibashi’, ‘Rei Naito’, and ‘Tomoko Yoneda’ at the Japan Cultural Institute in Paris.
Directed the film ‘Atsuko Tanaka: Another GUTAI’.
Author of ‘Art, Women, and Film: Glocal Women’, ‘I Want to Know Art: The Honest Museology’ (Editor) among others.

Yoshio Suzuki
Worked as the Deputy Editor of Brutus at Magazine House for about ten years. Known for introducing artists like Hiroshi Sugimoto, Yoshitomo Nara, and Takashi Murakami early in lifestyle magazines, expanding the fan base of contemporary art.
Independently established Fine Arts Communication LLC in 2010.
Contributes art information to numerous magazines and web media, covering a range from contemporary to traditional art. He has conducted over 100 interviews with artists and contributed to ‘The Complete Works of Japanese Art’ (Shogakukan).
Leads the community ‘Art Editing Club’. Part-time Lecturer at Meiji Gakuin University.

 Noriaki Okabe
Head of Noriaki Okabe Architecture Network Government-certified architect of France Member of the Architectural Institute of Japan Member of JSCE Doctor of Arts and Engineering Engaged in architectural design in Europe since the 1970s. Established Satoshi Okabe Architecture Network in 1995. Major projects include the Kansai International Airport Passenger Terminal Building, the Odakyu Romancecar ‘VSE’, ‘MSE’, ‘EXEα’, ‘GSE’, and the Hakone Tozan Railway ‘Allegra’.

Kenichi Teramoto
Graduated from Tokyo University of Science Graduate School in 2000. Worked for Neutelings Riedijk Architects in Rotterdam and later joined Coelacanth and Associates in Tokyo, handling various projects both domestically and internationally. Moved to Dubai in 2012 and co-managed ‘ibda design’ (later reorganized to ‘waiwai’), gaining several design awards for art centers and mosques. Left ‘waiwai’ in 2021 to establish ‘office of Teramoto’ in Katsuura, Chiba Prefecture. Same year, won the Golden Lion as the curator for the UAE Pavilion at the Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition.

第１部では、1986年にパリのポンピドゥー・センターで開催された『前衛芸術の日本 1910 – 1970』展でコミッショナー（キュレーター）を務めた岡部あおみさんをゲストにお迎えします。
聞き手は美術ジャーナリストの鈴木芳雄さん。
テーマは「“日本の前衛芸術”を世界へ拓いた展覧会をめぐって」。
伝説の展覧会として語られる『前衛芸術の日本 1910 – 1970』展が開催に至るまでの舞台裏や、その後のアートシーンに及ぼした影響をともに考察します。
出品アーティストとの交流や、開催中に起きた印象的な出来事など、当時のエピソードも交えてお話しいただきます。現在もインディペンデントキュレーターとして、国境を越えて精力的に活動を続ける岡部あおみさんが紡ぐ言葉から、時代をつないできた表現の歩みを辿るまたとない貴重な機会です。

第２部では、ポンピドゥー・センターの建築に設計チームの一員として参加し、『前衛芸術の日本 1910 – 1970』展では会場デザインも手がけた建築家の岡部憲明さんをゲストにお迎えします。
聞き手は、2021年のヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ国際建築展でUAE館のキュレーターを務め、金獅子賞を受賞した建築家の寺本健一さん。
テーマは『ポンピドゥー・センターの現場から、展示空間という建築を考える』。
1980年代、創造のエネルギーに満ちたパリの中心にあったポンピドゥー・センター。アートと建築が国境を越えて交差したその現場には、創造の情熱を分かち合いながら、ともに未来を描いた一組の日本人、建築家とアートキュレーターの姿がありました。
当時の熱気と葛藤の記憶、現場のリアリティを手がかりに、美術館建築やアートと空間の関係性をめぐるお話などをうかがいつつ、海外でも多くの実績を重ねてきた建築家同士の対話を通して、過去から現在、そしてこれから先の未来へとつながる、フィジカルな体験の場としての建築の可能性に迫ります。

岡部あおみ
メルシャン軽井沢美術館チーフキュレーター、パリ国立高等美術学校講師・客員教授、武蔵野美術大学芸術文化学科での専任教員を経て、2014－2020年、国際交流基金・パリ日本文化会館アーティスティック・ディレクター（展示部門）、2018－2021年、上野の杜新構想実行委員会国際部門ディレクター。『前衛芸術の日本 1910－1970』（1986年ポンピドゥーセンター)、『国際美術映像ビエンナーレ』（1990、92年同センター審査員)、『ジョルジュ・ルース阪神アートプロジェクト』（1995年)、『ジョルジュ・ルース in 宮城』(2013年)。2016年以降、パリ日本文化会館で「真鍋大度+石橋素」展、「内藤礼」展、「米田知子」展などのキュレーターを務める。監督作品に『田中敦子もう一つの具体』著書に『アートと女性と映像グローカル・ウーマン』、『アートが知りたい本音のミュゼオロジー』（編著）他。

鈴木芳雄
マガジンハウスにてブルータス副編集長を10年ほど務める。杉本博司、奈良美智、村上隆らをライフスタイル誌でいち早く紹介し、現代アートのファン層を広げる仕事で知られる。2010年に独立し、合同会社美術通信社を設立。多数の雑誌、ウェブメディアに美術の情報を発信している。現代アートに限らずその領域は古今東西の美術に及ぶ。美術家へのインタビューは100人を超える。『日本美術全集』（小学館）にも寄稿。コミュニティ「ビジュツヘンシュウブ。」を主宰。明治学院大学非常勤講師。

岡部憲明
岡部憲明アーキテクチャーネットワーク代表
フランス政府公認建築家日本建築学会会員土木学会会員芸術工学博士
1970年代からヨーロッパで設計に従事。1995年岡部憲明アーキテクチャー･ネットワーク設立。
主なプロジェクトに関西国際空港旅客ターミナルビル、小田急ロマンスカーの「VSE」「MSE」「EXEα」「GSE」
箱根登山鉄道「アレグラ号」など多数。

寺本健一
2000年東京理科大学大学院修了。ロッテルダムの建築設計事務所「Neutelings Riedijk Architects」に勤務後、東京の「シーラカンスアンドアソシエイツ」に所属。国内外の様々なプロジェクトを担当。2012年にドバイに拠点を移し「ibda design（後にwaiwaiと改組）」を共同経営。アートセンターやモスクなどのデザインで受賞歴多数。2021年に「waiwai」を離れ、千葉県の勝浦に「office of Teramoto」を設立。同年ヴェネチアビエンナーレ国際建築展UAE館のキュレーターとして金獅子賞を受賞。
